The video above is a recording of a phone call between my mother and her sister. They have not been in one another’s physical presence since my parents seeked refuge from Iraq amidst the Gulf War. Much of my family decided against leaving, but ultimately my parents found it best to pack our things and head West.

The phone called occurred the day after the insurrection at Capitol Hill. To me, the conversation signifies the constant fear and uncertainty people of the Middle East endure amidst any political turbulence. My family along millions of other Arabs have faced injustices by acting as the pawns of the Western politics.
